Mrs Merkel's Message to Europe: Screw The People - Forbes

Mrs Merkel's Message to Europe: Screw The People - Forbes ;.. Against that background the Spaniards, for example, managed to create a significant, vibrant and creative economy – perhaps the most creative European economy. But they are dogged by property speculation from the north, and an economy distorted by European policy, as much as they are by their own shortcomings as a young democracy.

The case against Europe: Doomsayers wail that a euro break-up would trigger Armageddon. That¿s what they said about us leaving the ERM ¿ but it sparked an economic boom! | Mail Online ;..
How did so many clever people get it so wrong? The flaws in the euro project were visible at the outset. It was never going to be possible to jam widely divergent economies into a single monetary policy.
Yet, in every national parliament, in every central bank, in every university faculty, in every BBC editorial conference, there was a collective suspension of disbelief.
Why? What were supporters of the single currency thinking?
Sometimes I wonder if it wasn’t so much a case of them liking the euro but more that they disliked the people who opposed it. They characterised opponents as xenophobes and Blimps, fogeys and Little Englanders, in contrast to their own image of themselves as progressive, cultured, free-thinkers.

Standard Chartered Settles Iran Inquiry for $340 Million - NYTimes.com

Standard Chartered Settles Iran Inquiry for $340 Million - NYTimes.com ;..
Standard Chartered, the British bank, has agreed to pay New York’s top banking regulator $340 million to settle claims that it laundered hundreds of billions of dollars in tainted money for Iran and lied to regulators.
Shawn Thew/European Pressphoto Agency
Peter Sands, the chief executive of Standard Chartered, flew to New York to negotiate over the weekend with state regulators.

Related in Opinion

The agreement is a victory for Benjamin M. Lawsky and his 10-month old agency, the New York Department of Financial Services, which took on the bank alone in charging that it schemed for nearly a decade with Iran to hide from regulators 60,000 transactions worth $250 billion.

French president vows to impose order after rioting hits north of country - World News

French president vows to impose order after rioting hits north of country - World News ;..  Reinforcements were being dispatched to the suburb, parts of which had already classified as a "priority security zone" in need of extra policing. The policy formed part of the Socialists' election campaign pledge on law and order.
The unrest was the first major law and order test for Hollande's ruling Socialists following his May election victory over conservative incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy, whose tough policies on crime and immigration some critics said fanned urban unrest.
Smoldering ruins
During a night of disturbances, rioters set fire to a number of vehicles, in some cases hauling the drivers out of their cars before burning them, mayor Demailly said.
The riots on Monday night actually began Friday and continued every night since then.

Don't Believe In The Central Banking Theater Of The Absurd - Business Insider

Don't Believe In The Central Banking Theater Of The Absurd - Business Insider ;.. ABSURDITY OR REALITY ;....Their job, such as it is, is to deflate a tottering system based on phantom assets slowly enough that it doesn't implode. Stripped of mumbo-jumbo, their strategy to accomplish this is to inflate other phantom assets to replace the phantom assets that are falling to zero.
All their promises, preening and posturing boil down to patting their breast pocketand speaking vaguely about a "secret plan" to end the crisis without bringing down the system that spawned the crisis as a consequence of its very nature.
There is no secret plan, of course, and no secret financial weapons; all they really have is artifice and the hubris to present artifice as reality.
To admit the usustainable is not sustainable would bring the entire rotten edifice crashing down, so the central bankers invite us into their little Theater of the Absurd and evince a phantom confidence in their phantom solutions that depend on phantom assets.
A swollen cloud of doom hangs over the central banker's little Theater of the Absurd; all their chest-pounding hubris and empty confidence is artifice, as phantom as the assets they claim will replace the phantom assets that have been destroyed by exposure to reality.
On their absurd little stage, they claim the Emperor's robes are thick and fine; and we laugh, bitterly, for these threadbare lies are all they have to "save" a parasitic, predatory, anti-democratic financial Status Quo.

No End To Long-Term Unemployment - Business Insider

No End To Long-Term Unemployment - Business Insider   ....I have been arguing for four years that our business-cycle problems call for more aggressively expansionary monetary and fiscal policies, and that our biggest problems would quickly melt away were such policies to be adopted. That is still true. But, over the next two years, barring a sudden and unexpected interruption of current trends, it will become less true.
The current balance of probabilities is that two years from now, the North Atlantic’s principal labor-market failures will not be demand-side market failures that could be easily remedied by more aggressive policies to boost economic activity and employment. Rather, they will be structural market failures of participation that are not amenable to any straightforward and easily implemented cure.

True Light Lutheran Church | Page 2

True Light Lutheran Church | Page 2 ;..   As in politics, the point about the Trinity, at least the point that most affects us, is the economy of the Trinity.  That is, how God saves us.
Just like it’s all well and good to have the world’s greatest economic plan, if it can’t relate to (or save) the people it is being applied to then its value is only in and of itself.  And that value may even be incredibly high (all analogies fall short).
The Trinity, in and of its Father, Son, and Holy Spirit self, is of infinite value and worth.  That God is God is true despite any relating to the creation, any saving, any interaction at all.  But that’s the beauty of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

BBC News - Anders Breivik trial: A 10-week ordeal

BBC News - Anders Breivik trial: A 10-week ordeal ;.. Words. The power of words. That's what I'll remember most about this trial.
Over 10 weeks, so many terrifying words have been spoken in Courtroom 250; the words of coroners in the 77 autopsy reports; detailed descriptions of how victims were hunted down and shot; words of pain from their families.
Words which journalists covering the trial have had to type, tweet, despatch and broadcast to the world.
It was often the simplest words which proved to be the most upsetting. Like the brief messages from victims' families which followed each coroner's report.
"Daddy, YOU were the best in the world."

Was Flame virus written by cyberwarriors or gamers? ;..   super-secret spy software be written in a video game language?  As security researchers continue to unpack the digital mystery that is the Flame virus, that's just one question looming over perhaps the world's most intriguing digital whodunit.
With all the talk about Flame being the most powerful, ingenious and stealthy computer virus ever written, some properties of the mysterious malicious software are causing confusion.
For one thing, the program takes up 20 megabytes of space on infected machines. That's not stealthy; large files usually indicate sloppy programming.

EU: A financial Union before the fiscal one? | New Europe

EU: A financial Union before the fiscal one? | New Europe ;.. The Spanish banking chaos and the Greek political problems have prompted all careful asset managers to reduce their exposure to European values. In reality, what was so far a sovereign debt problem for Eurozone's sinner governments, has become a banking confidence issue, threatening the euro area and the world with a new and far worse credit melt down.

The European Banking Authority, which was created last year, is obviously unable to take over and resolve the current transnational frictions between Eurozone banks. What is even more alarming however, has to do with the refusal of the European Central Bank to cooperate in resolving the Spanish crisis.

First Read - Catholic heavyweights challenge Obama rule on contraception ;..  The Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., and the University of Notre Dame separately filed lawsuits in federal court challenging a Health and Human Services rule that would require them to offer coverage for contraception, the use of which runs contrary to Catholic teaching.
"For the first time in this country’s history, the government’s new definition of religious institutions suggests that some of the very institutions that put our faith into practice — schools, hospitals and social service organizations — are not ‘religious enough,'" said Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the archbishop of Washington, in a statement.
Father John Jenkins, the president of Notre Dame, said: "This filing is about the freedom of a religious organization to live its mission, and its significance goes well beyond any debate about contraceptives."

Bankia's shares plummeted 7.43 percent on Thursday to close at 1.57 euros, taking total losses to more than 58 percent since their listing in July 2011.

A: It is not true, but it's less inaccurate that it was three or four years ago. It’s not teetering on the verge of chaos because violence remains concentrated in a few places. But those places have been changing over the past five years.

German court rules against Microsoft | New Europe

German court rules against Microsoft | New Europe ;.. A German court in Mannheim ruled that Microsoft infringed Motorola Mobility's patents in making the Xbox 360.

The same court decided to ordered Microsoft to remove its popular gaming consoles and Windows 7 operating system software from the German market.

However, according to Microsoft, "our business in Germany will continue as usual while we appeal this decision and pursue the fundamental issue of Motorola's broken promise".

This case is related to the larger smartphone patent war being fought by the giants Apple, Microsoft and mobile phone makers who use Google's Android software such as Samsung.

Juncker criticises Germany, resigns Eurozone presidency | New Europe ;.. As things stand now, Berlin has the unquestionable backing of many important euro area member states, called the Merkelets (Austria, Holland, Finland). However, most of the small member states of the single European money zone (Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta, Cyprus, Estonia) are just following the mainstream options usually formulated by Berlin and Paris. Juncker's criticism against Germany went as far as accusing Berlin of showing arrogance vis-a-vis all the rest of Eurozone's members.

He argued that Germany is part of the problem and not the only country which offers solutions to the over-indebtedness crisis. He added that seven countries have a better fiscal showing than Germany.

According to information from Brussels, filling the presidency of the Eurogroup will give a first taste of the future Franco-German relations in case Francois Hollande wins this Sunday's election.

A €2.5 trillion firewall for Eurozone | New Europe

A €2.5 trillion firewall for Eurozone | New Europe  ;..  Then there was the European Financial Stability Facility and the permanent fire wall mechanism to succeed it, namely the European Stability Mechanism. Those two financial tools are going to coexist and their joint fire power will be of €700bn.

Last but not least, over the past three months the European Central Bank handed out €1 trillion to 800 Eurozone banks, in the form of three year liquidity support loans at the negligible interest rate cost of 1%. The ECB however has spent more money in supporting the Eurozone's capital markets.

In detail, the European Central Bank's interventions in the secondary sovereign debt markets to support the prices of the Greek, Spanish and Italian debt bonds must have reached a round sum of €200 billion.

The IMF

On top of all that, the major Eurozone economies have pledged another €200bn in support of the IMF's own financial arsenal. As it turned out this past weekend in Washington, the new money pledged by the developed and the developing member countries of the Fund has reached almost €700bn in new funding, with the €200bn being the European contribution.

The IMF will not say that this new money is to be used to counter a possible new crisis in the Eurozone, but it goes without saying that most of it will be used to counter a probable new attack on European values. Avoiding duplications add all that together and the fire wall available for Eurozone may reach €2.5 trillion.

Don't be blinded by the light: the 'right to be forgotten' clarified | New Europe ;.. Today, after more than two and half millennia, whether forgetfulness is a blessing or a curse is still discussed as part of a debate on what is broadly known as the right to be forgotten or right to oblivion in the digital world.

On 25 January, the Digital Agenda Commissioner Viviane Reding, realised her promise to present a proposal to review the current Data Protection Directive 1995 (“DPD”); a plan which would include a separate “right to be forgotten” aiming to arm the user with full control of his personal data in the digital world.

Chinese values? | New Europe

Chinese values? | New Europe: This means that, in political and economic terms, we are entering an East and Southeast Asian century.

Lest we forget, the outcome for the world would have been far worse if China’s ascent had failed. But what will this world look like? We can foresee the power that will shape its geopolitics, but what values will underlie the exercise of that power?

The official policy of “Four Modernizations” (industrial, agricultural, military, and scientific-technological) that has underpinned China’s rise since the late 1970’s have failed to provide an answer to that question, because the “fifth modernization” – the emergence of democracy and the rule of law – is still missing.

Eurozone still far from a virtuous path | New Europe

Eurozone still far from a virtuous path | New Europe ;.. Finally, in March 2012, the Troika concluded a new agreement (second MoU) with Athens containing generous debt reductions and soft loans to the order of €130bn. Now, two weeks ahead of the Greek elections, the country says it might yet again miss the targets for government deficit reduction and structural reforms contained in this second MoU.

As mentioned above,Venizelos, one of the country's most influential politicians, has already cast doubts over the ability of his country to apply the unpopular measures agreed in the MoU. It was not by chance that the head of the IMF Christine Lagarde said this past week that she has three advises to give to Greece: implement, implement, implement!
